Chicago Fire Media Guide (1974): Virg was the first National Football League veteran to jump to the WFL after playing out his option with the Cincinnati Bengals. He had been traded in the off-season to the San Diego Chargers prior to joining the Fire. A record setting passer at Brigham Young, Virg was a sixth round choice of the Chicago Bears in 1967. After a season on the taxi squad, he played in seven games in 1968 and directed the Bears to four straight victories before a broken ankle sidelined him. After the 1969 season, he was released and picked up by Buffalo, then traded to the Bengals where he took over after three games and ignited Paul Brown's team to the division championship. The next year, Virg led the NFL in passing accuracy by completing 62.2 percent of his passes. After a good year in 1972, he suffered a broken colllarbone in a 1973 exhibition game and missed the entire season. --- As the Chicago Fire signal caller in 1974, Carter led the team to 7 victories in 12 games before injuring his thumb in the game against Memphis. At the time he was among the League leaders in many passing statistics.
